A varicocele is a dilation of the veins inside the scrotum. This is a common occurrence – with 15 out of every 100 men having a varicocele. They are more common on the left because the male anatomy is not the same on both sides. The majority of varicoceles cause no problems; however, they can result in pain, infertility, or retarded testicular growth.

The physicians at Athens Area Urology will perform a thorough evaluation which may include a testicular ultrasound. Varicocele treatment is most often surgical, but varicocele surgery is reserved for those with:

  • Infertility

  • Scrotal pain

  • Slowed testicular growth
